Home Schooling ( Home Education)

Taking a child out of school is a very personal and difficult decision to make. Over the last three years, I have received numerous requests to support families, and I am currently homeschooling a group of children ranging in age from 11 to 16. We focus mainly on English and Maths in our sessions, but I have also helped with many other subjects.

Contact me to discuss how I can help you.

The Legal Side

In the UK, parents have the legal right to educate children at home, known as Elective Home Education (EHE), from the term after their fifth birthday. While you do not need to be a qualified teacher or follow the National Curriculum, you must ensure a "suitable" and "efficient" full-time education. Parents take full responsibility, including all costs, and should notify the school in writing if removing a child.

Key Aspects of Home Schooling in the UK

  • Process for Removing a Child: If your child is already in school, you must inform the school in writing of your intention to home educate. The school must accept this, though you may need to seek council permission if the child is under a school attendance order.

  • Local Council Role: Local councils can make "informal enquiries" to check if you are providing a suitable education. They may serve a school attendance order if they believe the education is not sufficient.

  • Costs & Support: Home education is self-funded, including exam fees.

  • Special Educational Needs (SEN): If your child attends a special school, you must obtain council permission to remove them for home education.

  • Legal Requirements: Under Section 7 of the Education Act 1996, you must ensure your child receives a full-time education suitable to their age, ability, and aptitude, and any special educational needs.

  • Curriculum & Style:

You are not required to follow the National Curriculum, set specific hours, or have a classroom-like setting

. Education can be flexible, allowing for methods like

    self-directed learning

     or

    structured, traditional methods
